3rd Year Geography Fieldtrip to Mitchelstown Caves- Pics

Today, our 3rd Years took a subterranean trip to Mitchelstown Caves. We made the most of the sunny weather before heading deep underground… 60 meters down, to be exact!
Before entering the cave, students completed field sketches of the surrounding glacial landscape and identified aspects of the Geography they had learned over the Junior Cycle course. Inside, we explored over a kilometer of cave passages filled with stunning features like stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, and formations that resembled an elephant, a zombie, a penguin, and even the Statue of Liberty! We saw the only underground seismograph in Ireland, experienced complete darkness for a few seconds and spotted fossils from when Ireland was once closer to the equator. We also visited the unique performance area where musicians like Hozier have played. It was a brilliant day of learning and adventure, and we were all glad to see the sunshine again as we emerged from the cave!
