5th and 6th Year Geography Fieldtrip: Mitchelstown Caves

March 27, 2026

To enhance their understanding of Karst Landscapes, the 5th and 6th Year Geography students ventured down into the subterranean world of the Mitchelstown Caves. They travelled through an extensive network of caverns stretching over a kilometre, where they observed the gradual formation of stalactites, stalagmites, and pillars, while also gaining insight into the caves’ history and discovery.  Standout moments of the tour included seeing a seismograph in action, and a brief experience of total darkness, followed by a demonstration of carbonation under ultraviolet light, which illuminated the cave formations with an eerie blue glow. An enjoyable trip for all.
