Today 1 Pi became archaeologists! Using cocktail sticks as “trowels” and cookies as excavation sites, students mapped their “dig” on a grid, marked visible “artefacts” (chocolate chips), recorded precise grid references, and then carefully excavated their finds—proving that patience and good note-taking are as important as sharp eyes. Using our Cookie Excavations worksheet, they also learned key terms like archaeology, excavation, site, and artefact before getting hands-on.
Throughout the excavation students built real skills in observation, mapping, and evidence recording. They brought the book to life by turning concepts from History into a memorable, tactile experience. The activity also illustrated how archaeologists protect, document, and interpret the past—crumbs and all!
