RMC’s annual Celebration of Excellence was held recently to mark outstanding student achievements. In keeping with the school’s foundation document excellence in many different fields was celebrated – moral, academic, sporting, intellectual, aesthetic, creativity and practical skills. The keynote speaker for the event was Past Pupil Cllr. Paula Desmond and she spoke about the wide variety of educational experiences on offer to students in RMC both in her own time as a student here and currently.
Award winners on the day included members of the Debating Society, Astronomy Club, Chess Club, Student Council, School Choir and School Orchestra. Other winners were students involved in the school bank, the school musical, the Lesotho Project, SHARE, Mini-Company and Munster Programming computing. Gaisce medals awarded by the President of Ireland were presented to 16 students and certificates of unbroken school attendance were presented to 22 students.
Sporting achievements celebrated on the day included success in hockey and athletics at Munster level and swimming at Munster and national level.
Academic excellence was also celebrated with awards for students who achieved top grades in all subjects in the Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations. A presentation was also made to Past Pupil Ms. Edith Wilkins to mark her recent selection as Rehab International Person of the Year in recognition of her on-going work for street children in India.
The day was rounded off with a inspirational performance by our school choir who recently won the Pepetual Shield competition in Feis Maitiu. The choir features members of every year group in the school and competed in the Feis under the direction of Ms. Beecher.
