1961-2011     Fifty years ‘with wisdom and courage’

From the foundation of the school, participation in sport was very important to our foundress, Daisy Corrigan, as the following extract from Miss Daisy Corrigan, by Ann-Marie Desmond, shows;

Hockey was one of the highlights of Daisy’s week. She timetabled it for every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, which resulted in students having two hours of Maths and Latin every Saturday morning instead.

She felt that team games were very important for both moral and physical training, encouraging a sense of ‘each for all and all for each’ as well as ‘a sound body is a great help to a sound mind’.

The College does not have Sports facilities on its grounds. However , it does have access to Nemo sports grounds nearby for Physical Education classes and Gaelic Football/Camoige.

The P.E. classes are 2 hours each week from 1st to 4th year.

We also have access to Garryduff Water-based and Astro pitches for hockey.

We encourage all pupils to participate in the many sporting activities which are organised and supervised by teachers.  Teachers voluntarily give generously of their time and expertise, far beyond the call of duty.

These organised activities include: hockey, football, camogie, tennis, athletics, swimming and equestrian.

Hockey is a long established sport in the school.  We enter at least 5 Teams into the Munster cup and league competitions from 1ST Year to Seniors each year

Training sessions take place in Garryduff on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with matches at regular intervals.

We appreciate the contribution given by parents and past-pupils as coaches at these sessions and matches.

Participation in Cross-country and track and field competitions is very much encouraged. Each year bus loads of athletes compete at different venues, particularly C.I.T.

The College also has a Sports Day each May in which all the students  participate.

Each year the school enters swimmers in the Munster and National Schools galas with great success, particularly in the relays.

Swimming is also part of our P.E. Programme in the nearby Douglas Pool.

We participate in the National Schools Hunter Trials and Show-Jumping Events at various venues throughout the country each year with the help and support of parents.
